(English) Perilla Leaf

Source Leaves or shoots with shoots of the labiate plant Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt.

Plant Form Annual herb, 60-90cm tall, white pilose in the upper part. Leaves opposite, leaf blade ovoid or orbicular, 3 to 9.5cm long, 2 to 8cm wide, apex acuminate or caudate, base subrounded, margin coarsely serrate, both surfaces purplish-red, light red, with glandular dots. Verticillasters 2-flowered, forming a biased pseudo-raceme; bracts ovate, apically acute or caudate; calyx campanulate, outside pilose and glandular dotted; corolla purplish-red or light red, corolla tube annularly hairy, 2-lipped, upper lip retuse, lower lip 3-lobed; stamens 4. Nutlets subglobose, yellow-brown, reticulate. Nutlets subglobose, yellowish brown, reticulate.

Cultivated throughout the country.

Harvesting Harvested in summer when the branches and leaves are in full bloom, remove impurities and dry in the sun.

Traits The leaf blade is wrinkled, curled and broken, with crenate edges. Both surfaces are purple or the upper surface is green, the lower surface is purple, sparsely gray-white hairs, the lower surface has most of the concave dot-like glandular scales. Petiole 2-7cm long, purple or purple-green. The shoots are 2-5mm in diameter, purple-green, with pith in the middle of the section. The gas is fresh and fragrant, and the flavor is slightly pungent.

Chemical composition Contains volatile oil, the oil is mainly perilla-aldehyde (l-perillaldehyde), perilla-alcohol (I-perilla-alcohol), limonene, linalool, menthol, eugenol, and contains Elshottziaketone, perilla ketone, eugenol and so on.

Taste and odor It is warm in nature and pungent in taste.

Functions and Indications It is used for relieving cold and wind-cold cold, coughing and vomiting. Used for wind-cold cold, cough and vomiting, vomiting in pregnancy, fish and crab poisoning.
