On October 26, 2011, the State Council launched the Nutrition Improvement Program for Rural Compulsory Education Students. The central government provides students in rural areas with a subsidy of 3 yuan per person per day for the supply of nutritious lunches. in 2014, the 3 yuan subsidy was raised to 4 yuan, and in 2021, the 4 yuan subsidy was increased again to 5 yuan.

According to the Outline of the National Medium- and Long-Term Education Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020), the Nutrition Improvement Program for Rural Compulsory Education Students has been launched since the fall semester of 2011 in order to improve the health of rural students, especially those in impoverished areas and those from economically disadvantaged families.
