The nine-story demon tower is the tomb of the Tuyuhun royal family.

The nine-story demon tower is the local name for the "Xuewei No. 1 Tomb". Xuewei No. 1 Tomb was one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in my country in 1996 and a national key cultural relic protection unit. It is the most spectacular tomb among the ancient tombs in Dulan, Qinghai. It is located in Hotwater Township, about 10 kilometers southeast of Chahanwusu Town, Dulan County, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai. The tomb belongs to the Tuyuhun royal tomb in the early Tang Dynasty and is also the first Tuyuhun tomb discovered in my country.

According to research, the tomb owners of these ancient tombs are basically members of the Tuyuhun royal family, which shows that they also once dominated one area. Tuyuhun was a trading people active on the Qinghai Road in the 5th century. They dominated the Qinghai Road area from present-day Sichuan Province in the east to the west to the Taklimakan Desert, and controlled the entire sphere of influence of east-west trade.

The appearance and structure of the nine-story demon tower

This large tomb faces south, 33 meters high, 55 meters long from east to west, and 37 meters wide from north to south. From the front, it looks like a " It has the word "gold", so it is called the "Oriental Pyramid". The two mountains behind the tomb stretch from east to west, like two giant dragons, and the tomb is like a pearl, forming a "two dragons playing with a pearl" trend. There are three layers of stone walls made of mixed mud and stone under the tomb. From top to bottom of the tomb, every 1 meter or so, there is a layer of wood that is neatly arranged across the tomb mound. There are as many as 9 layers in total.

According to calculations, it would take 10,000 people more than a year to build such a large tomb. Xu Xinguo, director of the Qinghai Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology, said that this kind of construction form and style of the tomb is unique among archaeological discoveries in China. The silk unearthed from the tombs has good texture, clear patterns and bright colors. It is a rare and precious historical relic. Grain burial objects are only found in the tombs of dignitaries.
