Chicken mulberry is widely distributed in China, Northeast Asia and South Asia.

Surveys have shown that wild mulberry has been found in Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Shandong, Shanxi, Henan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Jilin, and Taiwan in China. Wild mulberry sanghwang has also been found in Korea, Japan and Myanmar.
