Grouped in the order of Jawed Needlefishes (Beloniformes) in the family Hyporhampidae (Hemirhamphidae). There are 12 genera and 85 species. Our domestic heteroclitic genus, Hemiramphus and longnose genus 6 genera and 22 species. Palate shape is peculiar, the upper palate is short, triangular, the lower palate is long and thin beak-like, so the English name originally meant "half-beak".
