Commonly known as the bamboo slug. Medium to large shape, shaped like slender bamboo joints or broadly flattened blade-like, mostly green or brown. The head is small and slightly flattened, hypoglossal, with small compound eyes and a single eye of 2 to 3 or missing. Antennae are long or short, filiform. Mouthparts masticatory. Prothorax short, meso- and metathorax long. Wings 2 pairs, forewings small and leathery, hindwings membranous, anal region developed. Some have only 1 pair of wings or no wings. Gradual metamorphosis. Feet slender or broadly flattened, easily broken. Forelegs extended forward at rest, tarsus 5-segmented, a few 3-4-segmented; abdomen 10-segmented, caudal whiskers 1 pair, short and not segmented, ovipositor undeveloped.
Progressive metamorphosis, perched on plants at rest, with mimicry and protective coloration, not easy to be found. Phytophagous, mainly feeding on a variety of trees, weeds, sometimes eat cotton and other crops. Some species reproduce alone. The order of the world's known more than 2500 species, mainly distributed in the Eastern Ocean region and Central and South America, China has recorded more than 100 species.
