Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries also celebrate the Lantern Festival.
1. Japan
Japan has inherited Chinese culture to a large extent, especially some customs from the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Originally, the Lantern Festival in Japan was also held on the 15th day of the first lunar month, but due to the cancellation of the lunar calendar in modern Japan, it was changed to January 15th. Although time has changed, the customs remain the same. On the morning of the Lantern Festival, Japanese people drink red bean porridge, which symbolizes a prosperous new year.
In addition, the Lantern Festival is also a day for adult ceremonies. On this day, Japanese young people who have just grown up will put on kimonos and hold their own coming-of-age ceremony, which is similar to the Chinese crowning ceremony.
2. Korea
Korea was once our vassal state and was also deeply influenced by Chinese culture. Like China, South Korea’s Lantern Festival also falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, and is called Dawang Day. However, Koreans do not eat glutinous rice balls, but instead drink grain porridge, which means a bumper harvest today.
On the Lantern Festival, Koreans wear hanbok and fly kites in the wild. Unpleasant things are written on the kites to make these things fly far away. In the evening, there will be a bonfire party. In fact, South Korea has basically retained all the festivals in Chinese civilization. For example, the same is true for the Spring Festival, but Korean Spring Festival couplets are white.
3. Vietnam
Vietnam was also one of the vassal states at that time, and like South Korea, it has retained many traditional festivals. On the Lantern Festival, Vietnamese people eat rice cakes together and then go to the flower market to buy a few pots of flowers. Various celebration activities are held in Vietnam, such as dragon dance, lion dance performances and so on. All in all, the situation is similar to that in China.
4. Thailand
In Thailand, on the Lantern Festival, everyone goes to the temple to burn incense and pray for blessings, and they will get up very early to try to burn the first stick of incense.
5. Malaysia
Malaysia On this day, young men and women will come out to watch the light show, hoping to find the person they like.
6. Singapore
In Singapore, except for the language, almost every aspect of celebrating the Lantern Festival is exactly the same as in China.
