Fuzhou City, also known as Rongcheng, Sanshan, Zuohai, Mindu, abbreviated as Yung, is the capital of Fujian Province, located in the eastern part of Fujian Province, the lower reaches of the Min River. It is now under the jurisdiction of five districts, two cities and six counties, with a total area of 12,000 square kilometers and a total resident population of 6.87 million; of which, the urban area has a total resident population of 2.71 million. Historically, it has long served as the political center of Fujian, both as an important trading port on the southeast coast of China and as the gateway to the Maritime Silk Road, and also as an important cultural center, where culture and education have been very well developed since the Song Dynasty, and it is one of the Chinese cities that have produced the largest number of jinshi (scholar), shengyuan (scholar-apprentice), and academicians of the two academies of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The customs, culture, traditional arts and architectural forms here are all self-contained and have strong regional characteristics. Fuzhou is also the ancestral home of more than 3 million overseas Chinese, a major overseas Chinese community in Fujian.
