Osmanthus has a bright fragrance and bright color, and its leaves are evergreen all year round. It is a flower with high ornamental value. Moreover, osmanthus can also be used to make delicacies, such as osmanthus cake and osmanthus wine. Cultivating a sweet-scented osmanthus tree in the courtyard or indoors will bring a refreshing fragrance to your home, so sweet-scented osmanthus is also called Jiuli Xiang. Summer is the flower bud differentiation period of sweet-scented osmanthus. To grow sweet-scented osmanthus in July, you need to do three things well. It is not difficult to produce abundant, fragrant and bright flowers in autumn. So how to do it specifically?
(1) Sufficient light
Osmanthus likes a sunny environment and can tolerate a semi-shaded environment. When it is a small seedling, it prefers a semi-shaded environment due to high temperatures in summer. The mature seedlings prefer more sunlight.
Sunshine: Cultivate osmanthus in July. Osmanthus grown outdoors can be grown in sufficient sunlight. Indoor-cultured osmanthus also needs to be grown in the sunniest place. This is because summer is the naturalized flower bud differentiation period, and more sunlight is conducive to the differentiation of osmanthus flower buds. Because most of the osmanthus flower bud differentiation starts in June and is completed from the end of August to the beginning of September, it is important to have sufficient sunshine in July.
(2) Fertilizing in July is very important
Osmanthus is a flower that likes fertilizer. Because it blooms for a long time and blooms a lot, it easily consumes a lot of nutrients. If there is insufficient fertility, it will not grow well, flowering will be reduced, and the flowers will not be fragrant. Therefore, fertilizer will be applied before germination in spring, and top-dressing will be applied again during the growth period in April and May. Fertilization will also be applied during high temperatures in summer. So how to fertilize in July?
Fertilization: When the crown of the osmanthus grows, what we want to do is to promote flowering, because the high temperature in summer is the flower bud differentiation period of the osmanthus. Fertilizing the osmanthus during this period is beneficial to the flower buds. Differentiation is more conducive to more abundant, bright and fragrant blooms in autumn.
To fertilize osmanthus in summer, usually in early July, you can apply a thin liquid fertilizer. The ratio of fertilizer to water is 1:9. For flower fertilizer, you can use Huaduoduo No. 2, because the content of Huaduoduo No. 2 is , not only contains phosphorus and potassium, but also nitrogen, which can promote the growth and flowering of sweet-scented osmanthus. If you simply use potassium dihydrogen phosphate, it will not be able to promote the vigorous growth of osmanthus.
When fertilizing Osmanthus fragrans, we can water it thoroughly before applying fertilizer, in order to make the fertilizer thinner and prevent root burn due to fertilizer damage. Also apply fertilizer again after flowering.
Osmanthus also likes slightly acidic soil. Flower lovers in the north can apply 0.2% ferrous sulfate water-soluble fertilizer to osmanthus every 30 days to prevent iron-deficient yellow leaves and root rot.
(3) Likes a humid environment
Osmanthus likes a warm and humid environment. The suitable humidity during the growth period is 70 to 85%. If it is too dry, it will affect Osmanthus blossoms. However, if you don’t water it too much, the soil in the pot will accumulate water and become wet, and roots will rot and leaves will fall easily.
Watering: Although osmanthus likes a humid environment, it does not like the pot soil to be too wet, so we can wait until the soil is dry before watering it again. And the best time to water is in the morning or evening.
In order to keep the environment where Osmanthus fragrans is humid, we can frequently spray water on the leaves and surrounding areas, which can lower the temperature and increase air humidity. However, ventilation should be better to prevent root rot from pests and diseases.
Heavy rains are likely to occur in July. In this case, it is necessary to move to a sheltered place to prevent excessive rainfall, which may cause problems with the Osmanthus fragrans root system and cause root rot.
To water the osmanthus, it is best to use rainwater. If you use tap water, you can leave it for 24 hours and wait for the chlorine in the water to evaporate before using it.
Osmanthus fragrans is not only beautiful but also fragrant and sweet, so it is very popular among flower lovers. When we grow osmanthus in July, we only need to provide sufficient sunlight, water after the soil is dry, spray water frequently and provide ventilation, and apply a thin layer of Huaduoduo No. 2 once, so that the osmanthus will bloom abundantly and brightly in autumn. The fragrance is still strong.
