The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival and the story of Qu Yuan are a patriotic poet and politician of Chu during the Warring States Period. He advocated uniting the Qi State against the Qin State, but did not accept his suggestion. He was finally placed under house arrest and died in a foreign country. Qu Yuan was heartbroken, alienated by Xiang Wang after his death, and finally exiled to remote areas. The State of Qin took the opportunity to attack the State of Chu, which lost most of its territory in a very short time, resulting in numerous casualties. When Qu Yuan learned of the fall of Chu in exile, he felt extremely desperate and threw himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. After learning the news that Qu Yuan had thrown himself into the river, the local people went to the river by boat to look for his body and put food in it to prevent fish and shrimp from embezzling Qu Yuan's body. These customs later evolved into the tradition of eating zongzi and rowing dragon boats on the Dragon Boat Festival. According to folklore, after Qu Yuan threw himself into the river, the people of Chu would take a boat to the middle reaches of the Miluo River on the fifth day of May every year to offer food to Qu Yuan. It is said that an old doctor poured realgar wine into the river to drive away the dragon and protect Qu Yuan's health. In his dream, Qu Yuan learned that Chu people missed him and thanked them for their sense of justice and patriotism.
