3. When it comes to Hainan, many citizens and tourists will first think of coconuts.

Coconut (scientific name: Cocos nucifera L.) is a plant of the palm family Cocos nucifera. The plant is tall and tree-shaped, 15-30 meters high. The stem is thick and has annular leaf marks. The base is thickened and often grows in clusters. Small roots. The petiole is thick, more than 1 meter long. The inflorescence is axillary, 1.5-2 meters long, multi-branched, the fruit is ovoid or nearly spherical, and the fruit cavity contains endosperm (i.e. "pulp" or seed kernel), embryo and juice (coconut water). The flowering and fruiting period is mainly in autumn. Coconuts are mainly produced in the southern islands of Guangdong, Leizhou Peninsula, Hainan, Taiwan and the tropical areas of southern Yunnan. Coconut has extremely high economic value, and all parts of the plant are useful.

Growing environment

Coconut is a tropical light-loving crop that grows and develops well under the conditions of high temperature, rainy weather, sufficient sunshine and sea breeze. The annual average temperature is required to be above 24-25℃, the temperature difference is small, and there is no frost all year round, in order for coconut to bloom and bear fruit normally, the optimal growth temperature is 26-27℃. If the average temperature for one month of the year is 18°C, the yield will drop significantly. If the average temperature is lower than 15°C, it will cause flower and fruit drop and yellowing of the leaves. Moisture conditions should be more than 1500-2000mm of annual rainfall and evenly distributed. However, in areas with abundant underground water resources or irrigation, good growth can be achieved with annual rainfall of 600-800mm. The impact of drought on coconut yields can last up to 2 years. ~3 years. Long-term water accumulation will also affect the growth and yield of coconuts.

Coconut is suitable for growing in low-altitude areas. Hainan Island in my country can grow well at altitudes below 150 to 200m. Suitable soils are seaside alluvial soil and river bank alluvial soil, followed by sandy loam, then gravel soil, and clay is the worst.

The groundwater level is required to be 1.0~2.5m. Clay and swamp soil with poor drainage are not suitable for planting. In terms of soil fertility, it requires fertilizers rich in potassium. The soil pH value can be 5.2 to 8.3, but 7.0 is the most suitable.
