From the structure of the whole novel, 17-year-old Eileen Chang appreciated the characterization of Yu Ji in Farewell My Concubine, and wrote this miniature novel. In order to make the novel not to fall into the cliché, Zhang Eileen interpreted this story to avoid some of the world's well-known storyline, the story takes place in the night of Yu Ji's suicide, the place is Xiang Yu and Yu Ji lodging tent.

Eileen Chang's "Farewell My Concubine" is not long, with not many characters, uncomplicated scenes, and no intense fighting scenes, but through Eileen Chang's perspective, sense of smell, and sense of hearing in the text, it is as if we have seen again the brutal, intense, and full of horse manure odor and bloody fighting scenes of the Gaixian duel in the fifth year of the end of Qin and the beginning of Han Dynasty.
