The hero of the story is a girl who was born in a poor family. Her father used to be a brave farmer, but he was forced to death by the government in his early years. Her mother died when her daughter was very young, so the girl had to live with her grandmother.
The little girl is strong, courageous and good at solving problems. In love, she fell in love with a boy named Joy at first, but due to the pressure of family and society, she finally married a man who used to be a Japanese soldier. However, her marriage with this man is very unhappy. The man was an alcoholic, who often beat and scolded her, even raped her, and finally took her to a deserted mountain in an attempt to kill her.
The little girl finally escaped the man's pursuit. She returned to the village and led the villagers to rise up against the Japanese invaders. In this process, she was admired and respected by people around her because of her excellent leadership and her heroic deeds.
The novel finally ends with an amazing ending: the little girl was injured in the fierce battle with the invaders, but she still insisted on staying on the battlefield and finally raised the red flag. Her courage and spirit of struggle made the small mountain village of Red Sorghum a legend.
