"Popcorn lung", also known as "bronchiolitis obliterans". The symptoms of patients are cough and shortness of breath, some may have difficulty breathing, and severe cases may need lung transplantation. More common in eating popcorn, especially eating popcorn in the microwave oven. Open the steaming popcorn bag, and the thick creamy smell always makes people drool. But this is not the smell of corn itself, but the smell of diacetyl ketone, a chemical food additive, at a high concentration. Although it cannot be directly explained that eating a lot of popcorn containing diacetyl ketone will lead to "popcorn lung", no other factors that may cause the patient to get sick have been found. After many patients stopped eating popcorn, their breathing gradually improved.
Professor Guo Xiheng, a respiratory disease expert in Chaoyang Hospital, Beijing, also told us that the popcorn that people eat now contains some chemical food additives like diacetyl ketone, which will generate a series of substances harmful to human health during high-temperature heating in microwave ovens. People will cause damage to the lungs after inhaling or eating.
Experts suggest that it is best to eat less of this kind of food, or when you open the popcorn bag, you should first disperse the smell until you can hardly smell the cream.
