An angiosperm, family Lepidoptera, genus Cistanche. Fountain grass grows on steep walls or cliffs at altitudes of 1300 - 2000 meters. It is a perennial parasitic herb, up to 0.5 m tall, up to 3 cm in diameter, erect, with an expanded, fleshy, stout base. Whole plant brownish purple, spikelike, main axis thicker. Flowers small, corolla dark reddish purple, tube inflated in bundles. The gourd fruit is ovoid. The whole herb of Cistanche is used as medicine. Functions: It is effective in tonifying the kidney, strengthening the yang, moistening the intestines and relaxing the bowels. Indications: Kidney deficiency and impotence, lumbar, knee and leg pain, intestinal dryness and constipation, and cystitis. Folklore has been said to have the effect of immortality, "Fountain Grass" thus named. Usage: make wine, stewed chicken, soup, tea and medicine.
