Broadly speaking, the Huaiyang region includes the lower reaches of the Huaihe and Yangzi Rivers, including Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, Yancheng, and Huai'an, which are located in the north and south of the Yangtze River, next to the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, which in ancient times meant Yangzhou. Geographically it is an important transportation hub connecting north, south, west and east, and is relatively close in terms of food, dialect and customs.
Narrowly defined Huaiyang: Han for Linhuai, Guangling two counties; Tang, Song for Chu, Yangzhou two states; Yuan dynasty for Huai'an, Yangzhou two roads; Ming and Qing for Huai'an, Yangzhou two provinces; today's Huai'an, Yangzhou two cities, the two places have long been in the same administrative division in history.
