It was originally set up as a romantic comedy, and went the horror-suspense route because of the editor's suggestion. The author had considered using Love Burial or Kingdom of First Love as the title of the work, but ended up taking a title related to words that appear in the work. In addition, many of the sub-titles for each story were thought up by the editor.

The earliest inspiration for the work was a meat-eating woman, so Sugar Salt Shoko's last name is taken from the very famous beef. Sand Sugar's impressionable animal is a bear (where the two doughnuts come from), and Salt is a lion, and their names are taken from Ganai 雰囲気女の子 and Salt Counterpart Woman, respectively.
