Late Scene of the Spring River in Huichong

Su Shi, Northern Song Dynasty

Three or two branches of peach blossoms outside the bamboo,

A prophet of the warmth of the spring river.

The ground is full of lóu hāo and the reed buds are short.

It is the time when the pufferfish is about to come.

A famous monk in the Northern Song Dynasty was good at poetry and painting. "Spring River Dawn" is his painting. There are two paintings, one is a picture of a duck playing and the other is a picture of flying geese. Su Shi also has two poems about paintings. This one is about duck opera. Artemisia annua: A perennial herb that grows in depressions. It has light yellow flowers and a stem four or five feet high. It is tender and crispy when it is new and can be eaten. (Dictionary explanation: perennial herb with light yellow flowers, which can be used as medicine) Reed buds: young buds of reeds, edible.

Pufferfish:

A type of fish, scientific name is "puffer". The meat is delicious, but its ovaries and liver are highly toxic. Produced in my country's coastal areas and some inland rivers. Every spring they swim up the river to lay eggs in fresh water.

Top:

Refers to the fish going upstream. Translation: Two or three peach blossoms are blooming outside the bamboo forest. Ducks are playing in the water. They are the first to notice the warming of the river in early spring. The river beach is already covered with wormwood and asparagus has begun to sprout. This is the season when pufferfish return from the sea and will swim up the river to lay their eggs.

Explanation of the sentence: There are three or two peach blossoms outside the bamboo. This is a warm scenery

Looking across the sparse green bamboo, a few peach blossoms are swaying. The peach and bamboo contrast with each other, and the red and green set off the scenery, making the spring atmosphere particularly attractive. Although this is just a simple sentence, it reveals a lot of information. First of all, it shows the sparseness of the bamboo forest. If it were dense, the peach blossoms would not be visible. Secondly, it indicates the season and highlights the word "early". The spring cold has just passed, and it is not the time for the peach blossoms to bloom yet, but the infinite vitality and potential of spring have already been revealed.

Duck prophets of spring river water warmth

Ducks are playing in the spring water of the river; they are the first to sense the message that the river water is warming up. Ducks know that water is warm, which cannot be expressed in paintings alone, but it can be expressed in poetry. In fact, is it the duck that predicts water heating? All aquatic creatures know warmth and cold. The poet wrote this to suit the scenery, but in fact it also expressed his joy and praise for the arrival of spring. There is a poem in the Tang Dynasty called "A bird is a prophet looking for a path among flowers", which has the same meaning and meaning as this sentence. This poem is very philosophical. Nowadays, when we refer to a new situation or news that is known in advance, we often quote this sentence.

The ground is covered with wormwood and wormwood, and the reed buds are short

Everything is new in spring. Along the riverside, lush wormwood covered the ground, and reeds sprouted short buds. These seven characters are not a general description of the scenery, but the poet's detailed description of the mood of these two plants through careful observation. Not a single word is idle. Wang Shizhen of the Qing Dynasty praised this poem in "Yuyang Poetry Talk" and said: "Po's poems... are not only wonderful in charm, but also like Mei Shengyu's 'Spring Islands grow buds, spring shores fly with poplar flowers', without a single word of it. "It's the time when puffer fish are about to come out." Mei Yaochen, a poet of the Song Dynasty, described this scene and said: "When puffer fish are in season, they are more expensive than fish and shrimps." The first three sentences describe the scenery in Hui Chong's paintings, while the last sentence is an association of emotions arising from the scene. The author's writing in this way outlines the whole picture more perfectly, giving people the joy that the harsh winter is over and spring has arrived in the world. The author is not only inside the painting, but also outside the painting, presenting everything that is not in the painting but is within reason. If all four lines of the poem are outline descriptions of scenery, the form would be a bit rigid. The processing of the last sentence not only makes the whole poem lively and vivid, but also greatly enriches the artistic conception of the poem and the painting.
