The first day of the tenth lunar month is also the first day of winter. Since then, the weather is getting colder and colder, and people are afraid that their ancestors' souls in the underworld are short of clothes and clothes. Therefore, when offering sacrifices, people burn their funerary clothes to their ancestors, which is called "sending cold clothes".
It is said that the origin of Cold Clothes Festival was initiated by Meng Jiangnv. According to legend, after Qin Shihuang unified China, he decided to build the Great Wall of Wan Li in order to resist the intrusion of northern minorities. Because of the great project, the Great Wall was forced to take young men all over the country to repair it. Fan Qiliang, Meng Jiangnv's "xianggong", was also among the young men who built the Great Wall.
After Fan Qiliang left, his parents both died soon, and Meng Jiangnv was alone at home, without friends and relatives. Finally, she took her hand-sewn clothes and begged for food and went to the north to find her husband. After arriving at the Great Wall, her husband Fan Qiliang was exhausted on the construction site.
When Meng Jiangnv saw this scene, she was like a thunderbolt, crying her eyes out. It can be said that she felt the heavens and the earth and cried the ghosts and gods, but she cried a lot about the newly repaired Great Wall. After that, she was afraid that her husband would catch cold in the underworld, so she burned (took) the clothes she made and buried the ashes with her husband's bones. She was extremely weak from grief and soon died with her husband.
After learning this, future generations were moved by her thousands of miles to find her husband, crying over the Great Wall and being faithful. In many places, in order to commemorate and cherish her memory, temples, monuments and articles were built for her, praising her true feelings and kindness, chastity and spirit. With the passage of time, people have designated the day of "burning clothes and burying husbands" as the Cold Clothes Festival to mourn the dead.
