Where is the quiet and serene story depicted in Taste of Green Papaya set in Vietnam.
The Taste of Green Papaya is a drama film directed by Hero Tran and starring Nguyen Nhu Quynh, Tran Nguyen Yen Khe, and Hoa Hoi Vuong. The film was released on June 8, 1993 in France. The movie focuses on a young girl, May's growing up experience, and tells about her living situation in two family environments successively.
At the age of ten, Mui (Nguyen Nhu Quynh) is sent by a neighbor to work as a maid for a large family in Saigon. Because of her resemblance to her dead daughter, Mui is loved by her mistress, but her mistress doesn't see any bright spots in her life, as her musician husband occasionally goes away for a few days without explanation, and later disappears without a trace.
May's three sons, who have nothing better to do with their time, often make fun of her, but slowly they realize that the gentle, kind-hearted May is the one who brings life to the family.
Ten years have passed and Mei (Chen Nuyanxi) has become more "classically beautiful". The mistress of the house, unable to support the family's expenses, begins to sell the family's assets and painfully sends Mei to work as a maid for another family.
