Two of China's mixed doubles teams advanced to the final of the Tokyo Olympics badminton tournament, locking up a gold medal for the Chinese team. Wang Yilu and Huang Dongping are known as the "Yellow Duck" duo because of Wang's nickname "Duck". The first time these two played together was at the 2012 Asian Junior Badminton Championships. In June of that year, when Wang Yilu was 18 years old and Huang Dongping was 17 years old, they participated in the tournament for the first time as a team. On their 1st time together, they had already gotten the second place.
In the next few years, these two were also competing mainly in men's and women's doubles. It was only on an ad hoc basis that they partnered in mixed doubles at the tournament. In 2018, the Chinese badminton team formed a mixed doubles team. It was only then that the two became partners for sure. It was also from this year that the duo's road to winning the title began. Badminton Asian Championships Mixed Doubles Champion, Japan Badminton Open Mixed Doubles Champion, World Military Games Mixed Doubles Champion in Badminton, Malaysia Badminton Masters Mixed Doubles Runner-up. Their resumes became more and more glittering. Winning more and more medals for China.
With the passage of time, the two also became more and more tacit understanding. The tacit understanding between two people in a badminton game is especially important. Only with constant bonding can they beat their opponents with ease on the court. Although the name of this pair is Yellow Duck, very cute, but they are on the field is very lethal.
The cooperation between these two people is also very difficult, because the two people's personality is the opposite of each other, so that they sometimes will be because of some small conflicts and quarrels. But for the sake of the same goal, both people are very hard working. And they just keep overcoming the clash of two people's personalities. We're a very special pairing, where other pairings would be good friends getting along, we're more like jungle brothers kind of getting along. We both like to dislike each other directly, and that has to do with our personalities I guess, we both have pretty good personalities and don't get angry at each other for saying that." Huang Dongping once described her relationship with "Duck" in an interview.
The two relied on constant bonding and hard training to qualify for the final of the Tokyo Olympics.
