Beihai City belongs to Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Beihai is located in the south of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the east coast of Beibu Gulf, with a span of 114 kilometers from north to south and 93 kilometers from east to west. It borders Guangdong Province in the east, Hainan Province across the sea in the south and Vietnam in the west. From Beihai Port to Haikou City, 124 nautical miles, to Zhanjiang City, 255 nautical miles, to Guangzhou City, 48 nautical miles, to Hong Kong, 425 nautical miles, and to Vietnam's coastal defense, 157 nautical miles. The total area is 3337 square kilometers.

In May 195, Beihai Town belonged to Hepu County. In January 1951, Beihai Town was changed into a prefecture-level city. In April 1956, Beihai was changed to a county-level city. In June, 1959, Beihai was changed into a county-level town, belonging to Zhanjiang Agency.
