It is an important freshwater aquaculture species in Southeast Asian countries and a unique high-quality economic fish in the Mekong River basin. It is transliterated as "Kabasha" in Vietnam, which means "three fatty fish", because the fish accumulates three large fats in its abdominal cavity during its growth, accounting for about 58% of its weight. It has the advantages of fast growth, large size, high yield, wide eating habits, easy feeding, white and tender meat, delicious taste, rich nutrition, no small thorns between muscles, and easy processing. It is often sold as sea fish such as Jackie Chan, snapper and cod.
