Who invented the lightning rod?
Franklin.

Franklin believed that lightning was an electrical discharge. To prove this, he risked being struck by lightning on a thunderstorm day in July 1752 by flying a kite tied to a long metal wire into a thunderstorm cloud, with a set of copper keys attached to the end of the wire. When lightning struck, Franklin approached the keys with his hand and a shower of electrical sparks erupted from the keys. There was still numbness in his hand.
