The movie "Bitter Vegetable Flower" is based on Feng Deying's novel of the same name
In 1937, Wang Guanzhuang, a large landowner in Jiaodong Peninsula, occupied one acre of land of Feng Renyi's family, who was a poor farmer. Feng was beaten to death by the landlord. The landlord was afraid that Feng's son, Degang, would cause trouble, so he wanted to take him to jail. On hearing the news, Degang left Wangguanzhuang in the night and fled to Guandong. Feng's wife, Feng Daniang, was a kind, loyal and timid woman, and after her husband's death, she led a son and three daughters into a miserable life. 1940, the Japanese invaders carried out a frantic sweep of the Shandong Revolutionary Bases, and the heroic people of Shandong, under the leadership of the ****production party, engaged in a tit-for-tat struggle with the enemy. Feng Daniang's daughter, Juanzi, took out the shotgun left by her father and joined the militia. Under the leadership of Jiang Yongquan, the head of the underground party, the peasants of Wangguanzhuang held an armed insurrection, eradicated the Japanese pseudo-regime in the village, and executed Wang Buan only, a big landlord and a traitor. Juanzi was trained in the struggle and became the head of the Women's Relief Society of Wangguanzhuang. In order to protect the fruits of victory, she not only supported Juanzi in joining the militia to fight against the devils, but also personally sent her second son Deqiang to join the Eighth Route Army. In order to intensify their sweep of the base area, the Japanese assigned Wang's only uncle and brother, the traitor Wang Hanzhi, to come to Wang Guanzhuang and carry out secret activities in the capacity of an elementary school principal. Zhao Xingmei, the president of the Women's Relief Society of the district, comes to Wangguanzhuang to investigate Wang Ganzhi's activities, and at the same time discovers that her fiancé, Degang, who is working in the arsenal, is the eldest son of Danniang Feng, and she recounts to Danniang the story of how Degang sacrificed his life bravely to protect the machines in the arsenal. Feng Daniang held back her grief and secretly resolved to contribute to the anti-Japanese work. According to the county party committee's notice, our arsenal was transferred to Wang Guanzhuang, but due to Wang Hanzhi's informing, the enemy suddenly attacked Wang Guanzhuang. Feng Daniang was arrested, and the enemy used a bitter trick on Wang Hanzhi to try to deceive the masses, but in fact Wang Hanzhi's true face as a traitor had long been recognized by the party members and the masses in Wang Guanzhuang. When the enemy was about to shoot at the masses, Zhao Xingmei stepped forward and covered the masses, and was finally killed by the enemy. Feng Daniang endured the grief of her loved one's sacrifice and led the enemy to an ambush minefield, blowing up two pseudo-military soldiers. In order to get from Feng Daniang where the machines of the arsenal were buried, the enemy used all kinds of poisonous means to force Feng Daniang to confess, and even captured Feng Daniang's youngest daughter's sister-in-law and beat her severely, but Feng Daniang remained steadfast and unyielding. Finally, the Eighth Route Army attacked Wangguanzhuang, and Deqiang and the village militia rescued Danniang's mother and daughter. When the hidden traitor Wang Ganzhi was exposed and chased by the militia, he begged Danniang to let him live, but Danniang mercilessly took up her weapon and killed Wang Ganzhi. During the struggle, Feng Daniang's daughter, Juanzi, and Jiang Yongquan develop a bond.
