Blueberries like acidic soil with little fertilizer, like sunshine and humidity, and need to store cold energy. Blueberries have strong adaptability and like acidic soil. The soil pH value is generally required to be 4.5 to 5.5. The soil should be soft, with an organic matter content of 8% to 12%. It likes moisture and has poor drought resistance. Its main varieties are high-bush blueberries, with a plant height of about 2m, which can withstand low temperatures of -25 to -30°C, and are generally set at 330 plants per acre; semi-high-bush blueberries, with a plant height of 1.0 to 1.2m, which can withstand -35 to -35°C. At a low temperature of -38°C, 330 plants per acre are generally planted; low-bush blueberries, with a plant height of 0.5m, can withstand low temperatures above -40°C, and are generally planted at 500 to 800 plants per acre, making them suitable for cold zone cultivation. Blueberry seedling breeding technology can adopt root tiller propagation, root propagation, cutting propagation and tissue culture propagation.
In northern areas, planting is generally done in the spring. Planting in the fall is prone to frost damage if not managed properly in winter. Spring planting is usually in March-April. Generally, seedlings that are 2 to 3 years old are used. Firstly, the seedlings are cheap, and secondly, they are highly adaptable and easy to grow.
It is best to choose a masonry pot for growing blueberries. Mud tile basins are highly breathable and cheap. The disadvantage is that black and gray are not very beautiful. If you can't buy a clay pot, you can choose a pottery pot, followed by a purple sand pot or a plastic pot. Never use a glazed porcelain pot. As for the size of the pot, for seedlings that are 2 to 3 years old, just choose a pot with a diameter of 25 to 30 cm. Avoid large pots for small seedlings. When it grows up, it will be changed to a larger pot. For mature plants that are 4 to 5 years old, the bigger the better.
Blueberries can grow healthily in acidic media. The pH value of the cultivation soil is between 4 and 5, which is most suitable for blueberry growth. This problem has troubled many blueberry lovers, because the pH value of pastoral soil is generally between 6 and 7. Even the acidic soil sold in the flower and bird market has a minimum pH value between 5.5 and 6.
After the blueberry seedlings are planted in the pot, they are placed indoors in a ventilated place out of the sun for a week. This process is called seedling slowing. After a week, it can be moved outside the balcony for normal maintenance.
Blueberries like moisture, especially in summer, so they need to be given enough water every day. But be careful not to accumulate water, otherwise the roots will rot. On rainy days in Shanghai, there is no need to bring blueberries indoors. No matter how heavy the rain is, as long as the flower pot is well-permeable, there will be no problem. You can find that during the growing season, if it rains for several days in a row, the blueberry leaves will be green and shiny, full of vitality, and new leaves will sprout quickly.
Blueberries love the sun, and the sun at 40 degrees Celsius in summer cannot kill them. During the growing season, they can tolerate high temperatures of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius in the surrounding environment, as long as they are given enough water in the morning. If there is lack of sufficient sunlight, the growth of blueberries will be stagnant, and even if they bloom, they will not bear fruit.
Blueberries require cold storage. The so-called cold storage capacity means that blueberries generally need X hours of low temperature <7.2°C to achieve normal flowering and fruiting. The specific time varies depending on the variety, so it is not suitable to grow blueberries in Hainan, my country. If the cold storage capacity is not enough, blueberries can bloom normally but will not bear fruit. Therefore, if you grow blueberries on the balcony in the Jiangnan area, you don’t need to move them indoors in winter.
Blueberries do not have high fertilizer requirements, but heavy fertilizers will harm them. A certain amount of leaf mold soil in the medium can basically meet the growth needs of blueberries. Of course, if you want to eat your own blueberries, you still need an appropriate amount of top dressing. It is recommended to apply "Hua Duoduo", 1 gram mixed with 1000 grams of water, once every 7 to 10 days. This kind of fertilizer is relatively warm and will not burn the roots even if used excessively.
