Recent scientific research has shown that this mechanism is physiological rather than psychogenic—a different answer than we first assumed. Growth hormone is a hormone known for initiating appetite. Growth hormone levels rise when subjects are hungry and fall after a meal. Researchers then observed that consuming 30 grams of dark chocolate caused a significant drop in growth hormone and a sharp decrease in appetite.

The positive benefits of dark chocolate don’t stop there. A recent study published in the United States by Professor Beatrice Columbus (Golomb et al., 2012) showed that people who have a regular habit of eating dark chocolate are unexpectedly thinner than those who do not eat dark chocolate.
