1962, he got a doctorate in anthropology and met his first wife, Ruth Mary, who moved to the United States together. His spiritual pursuit finally brought him into contact with the works of Gerald Gardner, the pioneer of Wicca. Gerald Gardner lives in the Isle of Man. Soon, buckland and Gardner agreed regularly, and buckland became Gardner's first spokesman in the United States.
