Who is Guanyin, who was called Shuiyue in ancient times?
According to Buddhist scriptures, Guanyin Bodhisattva has 33 dharma bodies with different images. The shape of the moon in the water is called Shuiyue Guanyin in the painting. See Hokkekyo Pumenpin. Later, it was used to describe the clear appearance of characters.

One day, Guanyin Bodhisattva came to Gusu City (now Suzhou) and saw that hundreds of thousands of people were killed by Jin Bing because of the war. Guanyin Bodhisattva is merciful and should use her magic to save these ghosts. So, the Bodhisattva turned into a beautiful woman, holding a willow bottle, and came to the place where ghosts were concentrated. She stacked the stones into a platform several feet high, and then stumbled on the stone platform to recite the Sutra of Great Compassion. Every time I say it a thousand times, the Bodhisattva soaks the willow tree in a pure bottle and scatters it into the air. Then insert the willows and continue to recite. The local people were puzzled when they saw a beautiful woman building a platform to chant Buddhist scripture, so they watched and discussed. Guanyin Bodhisattva said to the crowd, "You were bullied by Jin people, and hundreds of thousands of people died unjustly, which is very pitiful. These necromancers don't accept the three realms, and they don't care about the six realms. They are scattered outside. I am destined to come here today, and I am determined to turn them over, so I made a vow to build a platform to chant Buddhist scriptures for 49 days and sprinkle them with willow nectar to get them out of their misery as soon as possible. I don't want to raise money or eat quickly. After forty-nine days, I will explain it to you in detail. " Everyone knows that she is doing merits for the Gusu people for free, so she will stop talking about it.

Forty-nine days later, the Bodhisattva's chanting period expired, and everyone arrived as promised. Guanyin Bodhisattva explained the chanting in detail. One of them realized that this beautiful woman was the incarnation of Guanyin Bodhisattva. So he went up to him and said, "I heard that Guanyin Bodhisattva often travels around the world and often shows her face. I wonder if we are lucky enough to see your real body today? " "Yes," said the Bodhisattva. Then he pointed to the river and said, "Isn't there a bodhisattva in the middle of the river?"

Looking in the direction pointed by the Bodhisattva, I saw a shadow in the water, showing the treasure of Guanyin Bodhisattva. They hurried to bow down. There happened to be a moon shadow in the water at that time, which was very bright. Bodhisattva's treasure gradually disappeared in the shadow of the moon, slowly disappearing. When everyone got up, they found that the beauty on the stone stage had disappeared. Everyone understands that beauty is the embodiment of Guanyin Bodhisattva. Therefore, people built a temple in the place where the Bodhisattva recited the scriptures, in which a sprinkling statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva was enshrined, which was called "sprinkling Guanyin" or "dripping Guanyin" by the people.

Among the people who saw the bodhisattva displaying treasures by the river, one person is very good at drawing, and his name is Qiu. In order to show the world the treasure of the Bodhisattva, he painted the treasure of the Bodhisattva in Shuiyue with meticulous brushwork. The pictures he painted were wonderful and lifelike, and everyone was amazed. This Guanyin Bodhisattva, which appeared in Shuiyue, is called "Shuiyue Guanyin" by the world. Later, people asked Qiu for paintings and put them at home.

Today, Shuiyue Guanyin is still the majority of offerings of Suzhou and Hangzhou folk.
