To make Irish coffee, use a sturdy glass wine glass or a tall, thick-walled glass. Start by pouring hot water into the glass and repeat the process several times to warm the glass. The last few times you rinse the glass with hot water, place a small coffee spoon in the glass to warm it up. Pour the sugar, Irish whiskey and black coffee into the glass in that order and stir with the coffee spoon to fully dissolve the sugar, while still keeping the small coffee spoon in the glass. The last part, and the cleverest: place a dollop of cream on the tip of the coffee spoon and let the cream slide down the back of the handle of the spoon into the coffee, while still keeping the tip of the spoon in the coffee. The heated spoon in the coffee helps keep the top layer of cream in shape.
Don't stir the coffee after you've added the cream, which should be about 1 centimeter thick. The process of blending Irish coffee is a treat in itself. The moment you pour Irish whiskey into a hot glass, the alcohol will evaporate from the heat, and the room will be filled with the aroma of sprinkles, for which you will be intoxicated physically and mentally; followed by the pouring of scalding hot black coffee, the coffee meets the whiskey for a moment, bursting with a wonderful smell that will make you forget all of life's troubles.
