Commonly known as yam. Perennial herb with trailing, often purplish stems, cylindrical tuberous roots, opposite, ovate or elliptic leaves, creamy-white flowers, dioecious. The tuberous roots contain starch and protein and can be eaten.
The Compendium of Materia Medica records that Dioscorea was changed to yam because Emperor Tang Dai Zong's name was Li Yu to avoid taboo, and to yam because Emperor Song Ying Zong's name was Zhao Shu to avoid taboo. Yam is one of the constituent medicines of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan.
