Pinyin name Niu Jīn Cǎo

Also known as Qianjincao ("Compendium Supplements"), Qianqianta, Aizaicao, Qianjincao Renba ("Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine"), muzicao ("Guangxi Chinese Veterinary Medicinal Plants"), Newton grass, duck foot grass ("Southern Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine"), millet grass, pheasant claw, millet grass ("Southern Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine") "Eastern Fujian Materia Medica"), Biancao, Shuiqicao ("Jiangxi Folk Herbal Prescriptions"), hyacinth grass, cricket grass, Qianjin grass ("Commonly used Chinese herbal medicine in Shanghai"), Jizicao ("Fujian Chinese Herbal Medicine").

It is an annual herb in its original form, 15 to 90 cm tall. The fibrous roots are thin and dense. The stems are clustered, erect or bent at the base. The leaves are flat or curled, up to 15 cm long and 3-5 mm wide, hairless or with verrucous pubescence on the surface; the leaf sheath is flattened, ridged, hairless or sparsely warty, and the mouth is sometimes pubescent; the leaves are flat or rolled. The tongue is about 1 mm long. Spikes, 3 to 10 cm long and 3 to 5 mm wide, usually several arranged in finger-like shapes (rarely 2) at the top of the stem; spikelets have 3 to 6 flowers, 4 to 7 mm long and 2 wide. ~3 mm; glume-lanceolate, the first glume is 1.5~2 mm long, the second glume is 2~3 mm long; the first lemma is 3~3.5 mm long, with narrow wings on the ridge; seeds are oblong, subtriangular , about 1.5 mm long, with obvious wavy wrinkles. The flowering and fruiting period is from June to October.

Habitat distribution is found in wilderness and desolate places. Distributed throughout the country.

Functions and Indications

Clear away heat and relieve dampness. It can be used to treat summer fever, convulsions, jaundice, dysentery, gonorrhea, and dysuria in children; it can also prevent and treat Japanese encephalitis.

1. "Baicao Mirror": promotes blood circulation and increases strength.

2 "Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine": diuretic, clearing heat, eliminating hernia.

3 "Compilation of Commonly Used Folk Herbal Medicines": Strengthens muscles and bones, cures spermatorrhea.

4. "Eastern Fujian Materia Medica": Treats panic, stone stranguria, waist contusion, intestinal wind and blood, nausea, wheezing and coughing in children.

5. "Commonly Used Chinese Herbal Medicine in Shanghai": Promotes blood circulation and replenishes qi. Treat fatigue injuries and tuberculosis.

Usage and dosage: Oral administration: decoction, 3 to 5 qian (1 to 3 taels for fresh); or pureed into juice.

1. To treat high fever, cramps and coma: four liang of fresh beef tendon, three bowls of water, stew one bowl, a little salt, and consume within twelve hours. ("Eastern Fujian Materia Medica")

2. To treat jaundice, labor injuries, and fistula: wash the roots of oxen grass to remove mud, steam and heat the belly of black-bone hens, and remove grass-fed chickens. ("Compendium Supplement")

3. Treat damp-heat jaundice: 2 liang of fresh beef tendon and 1 liang of mountain sesame, decoct in water and take. (Jiangxi "Handbook of Herbal Medicine")

4. To treat dysentery: 1 to 2 liang of beef tendon, decoction and mixed with black sugar, take twice a day. ("Mindong Materia Medica")

5. To treat heat knot, abdominal distension and difficulty in urination in children: 2 liang of fresh beef tendon root, add some water and boil it into a bowl, divide it into three times and take it before meals. ("Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine")

6. To treat heat-related fever: 2 liang of fresh beef tendon, decocted in water and taken. ("Fujian Chinese Herbal Medicine")

8. To treat waist pain: one or two each of beef tendon and loofah, stew in wine and drink. ("Eastern Fujian Materia Medica")

9 To treat hernia, use 4 liang of fresh beef tendon root and 14 dried lychees. Add half and half rice wine and water, stew for one hour, take before meals, twice a day. ("Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine")

Ten treatments for the initial onset of mastitis, redness, swelling, heat and pain: one or two heads of beef tendon, one or two heads of dandelion, and one boiled egg. And gently rub the grass residue into the affected area. ("Southern Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine")

⑾Prevention of Japanese encephalitis: 2 to 4 liang of fresh goosegrass, decocted in water instead of tea.

Clinical application in the prevention and treatment of Japanese encephalitis: 1 tael of fresh grass for prevention per day, decoction once for 3 days; 10 days apart, then take for 3 days Or take 2 to 4 taels of decoction once a day for 3 to 5 days. Among 184,130 people who took preventive medicine, there were only 2 cases of illness, with an incidence rate of 0.91/100,000. Compared with the incidence rate in the past 6 years, Minimum 1 year. For treatment, use 1 to 3 taels of hay every day, wash it and add water to thickly boil it into 50 to 100 ml, take it three times, and a course of treatment lasts for 7 to 10 days. This was used as the main drug to treat 27 cases. Except for 2 cases that died, the rest were cured. The number of days it takes for the body temperature to drop to normal is as short as 1 day and as long as 12 days. The average fever reduction time for severe cases is 3.2 days. A few people have mild and short-lived back pain, diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting and other reactions after taking the medicine, but no adverse effects on the blood and kidneys have been found. (Goosegrass used clinically is sometimes mixed with sage millet of the same family.)
