Xuan Shen ----[Sex and flavor] taste sweet, bitter, salty; sex slightly cold. Attributed to the lung, stomach, kidney meridian. [Effects] Clearing heat and cooling the blood, removing fire and detoxifying the toxin, and nourishing Yin. Indications: Warmth and evil spirits entering the camp, internal trapping in the pericardium, warm poisonous spots, heat illnesses that injure yin, tongue redness and thirst, constipation due to injury of fluids, bone vapor and laborious coughing, redness of the eyes, sore throat, scrofula, diphtheria, carbuncles, swellings, sores and poisons.

Glycyrrhiza glabra ---- Functions: tonifying the spleen and benefiting the qi, clearing heat and removing toxins, expelling phlegm and relieving cough, easing the pain and harmonizing the herbs. It is used for weak spleen and stomach, tiredness and fatigue, palpitation and shortness of breath, cough and phlegm, contracted pain in the epigastrium, abdomen and limbs, carbuncle, swelling and sores, relieving toxicity and potency of drugs. Edit Functions and Indications

Dispels wind and settles spasms, resolves phlegm and disperses knots. (Quenching wind, relieving spasm, expelling wind, relieving pain, resolving phlegm and dispersing lumps) It is used for convulsions of wind, sore throat, submandibular lymphadenitis, facial nerve paralysis, and itching of the skin. (1) Extinguishing wind and relieving spasm: for headache, dizziness and convulsion caused by internal movement of liver wind, often used with tianma and whole scorpion. It is also used for wind-heat headache and itchy skin rash. (2) Resolving phlegm and dispersing knots: used in scrofula, tonsillitis and mumps. (3) Partial positive head wind, pinch head wind, and pain in two temples: use ground stiff silkworms and take one spoonful with onion tea. (4) Sudden headache: two coins a day from the powdered stiff silkworms, sent down with cooked water.

Jingzhi ------ Sexual flavor and meridian: pungent, slightly warm. Attributes to lung and liver meridians. Functions and Indications: Dispersing wind, clearing rashes, eliminating sores and stopping bleeding. It is used for treating colds, measles with poor penetration, blood in the stool, leakage, epistaxis. Origin and Sources: Distributed in most parts of the country. Mainly produced in Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hebei and other places. Constituents: Containing volatile oil. Usage and dosage: Decoction, 4.5~9 grams, should not be decocted for a long time. It is recommended to be used raw for penetrating rashes and eliminating sores, and fried for stopping bleeding. Thorny spikenard is longer in expelling wind.

Qianhu ------ Sexual flavor attributed to the meridian Slightly cold, bitter, pungent flavor. Attributed to lung; spleen; liver meridians.
