Quails belong to birds, galliformes and pheasants, which is different from the genus of chickens. Chickens belong to the genus of pheasants, while quails belong to the genus of quails. Quail birds are small, round, feathered and dull, and there is usually little difference between male and female.
Habitat in low hills, hay fields and stone areas with rich trees. I like some animals moving in groups. They mainly feed on branches and seeds, and also eat insects. Nesting in grass, fields or bushes, each nest produces 7- 14 eggs, and the chicks hatch in about 17 days. Common endemic birds. Distributed in East Asia, Northeast South Asia and Southeast Asia, it breeds in northern China and overwinters in South China, Southeast China and Southwest China.
Living habits of quail:
1, migration
Quails are summer migratory birds, which migrate every year and often flock. Most of them fly in groups at night and hide in grass and bushes during the day to rest and feed. There may be three routes for quail to move south in China:
First, it went south directly from Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, and arrived in Liaoning, Hebei, along the Yellow River and Qamdo, Tibet for the winter.
Second, from the Qamdo area around Qinghai, through Sichuan, Shaanxi and Henan, continue south to Jiangsu, Shandong and Anhui in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.
Third, from Changdu area to the southeast coast via Yunnan and Guizhou. From March to April every year, they will fly back to Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia to breed. The migration distance is about 400- 1000 km. At the same time, quails like to nest in warm and humid places, so there are cases of non-migration or partial migration.
Step 2 gather in groups
They appear in pairs during the breeding season, and small groups of 3~5 are often formed outside the breeding season. A pair of quails can breed many young birds a year and form a small family. The family foraged together during the day and crouched in the low grass at night, closely surrounding each other to form a circle, with the head facing outward and the tail facing inward.
This family will last until the spring breeding season comes. When spring comes, families are dissolved, and members look for spouses to reproduce and form new families.
3. Activities
Quails are secretive and often hide in bushes and grass. When they are afraid, they will sing. When in danger, they often stay in the grass for a long time, or run around in the grass and rarely take off. When flying, the wings flap faster and fly in a straight line, often flying at a low altitude close to the ground.
Male quails are more prone to commotion, panic and pecking than female quails. Quails are aggressive and like to peck at each other's eyes and neck. Some countries often refer to male quails as "fighting quails". Pecking may lead to feather shedding, and in extreme cases may lead to cannibalism.
4. Eating habits
Often foraging in grasslands and farmland. It mainly feeds on plant buds, buds, leaves, fruits, weed seeds and grains. It also feeds on small invertebrates such as insects.
