Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanyang Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Chongwu Festival and Tianzhong Festival. It is a folk festival that combines offering sacrifices to gods and ancestors, praying for evil spirits, celebrating entertainment and eating. Together with Spring Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day and Mid-Autumn Festival, it is called the four traditional festivals in China. In 2008, it was listed as a national legal holiday, and in September 2009, it became the first non-legacy festival in China.
Dragon Boat Festival originated from the worship of natural phenomena and evolved from the ancient Dragon Boat Festival. In folklore, the Dragon Boat Festival is still to commemorate Wu Zixu, Cao E, Jiezitui, Chen Lin, an upright official, and Gou Jian, the King of Yue, but the most popular one is to commemorate Qu Yuan. Legend has it that Qu Yuan, a poet of Chu State in the Warring States Period, committed suicide by jumping on the Miluo River on the fifth day of May. The Chu people did not give up his sage Qu Yuan. In order to prevent Qu Yuan's body from being eaten by river fish, people spontaneously paddled the river to disperse the fish. Later, this custom was handed down and gradually developed into the Dragon Boat Festival custom of racing dragon boats and eating zongzi.
Traditional festivals have always been a supplement to traditional culture. Poems describing the Dragon Boat Festival and remembering the ancients in past dynasties mainly include Su Shi's Dragon Boat Festival in Huanxisha, Lu You's Five Poems by Mao Yi and Liu Yuxi's Du Jingqu. The Dragon Boat Festival holiday date in 2023 is specifically arranged as: June 22-24, 2023, with a holiday of ***3 days. Go to work on Sunday June 25th.
