In recent years, the catering industry in various parts of the country has developed rapidly. From niche individual stores to the rise of chain brands, people are paying more and more attention to dining experience and taste satisfaction.
However, different cities have different understanding and development of gastronomy.
In my opinion, if I were to choose a food desert city, it must be Foshan, where I am now.
Foshan, a city with a long history and culture, is adjacent to Guangzhou and is known as the "land of plenty".
However, even with its unique geographical advantages and cultural heritage, Foshan's food seems to be quite simple and lacking in characteristics.
First of all, Foshan’s breakfast culture is quite weak.
When it comes to traditional cuisine, there are few places in Foshan that come out on top in Guangdong Province.
Foshan has almost no exposure to famous delicacies such as Hong Kong morning tea and Guangzhou breakfast.
Even the local specialty delicacy, claypot rice, is difficult to compare with other cities.
Secondly, there are few popular delicacies in Foshan.
In the current era where various online celebrity shops and trendy snacks are everywhere, ordinary restaurants in Foshan are often the main source of repeat customers and regular customers.
Foshan lacks those kitchen gimmicks that make young people crazy about eating, and lacks fresh and creative snacks.
Finally, even local specialties have not been well promoted in Foshan.
Foshan's traditional delicacies such as osmanthus cake and crystal powder are rarely known to outsiders due to lack of adequate marketing, let alone gaining a foothold across the country.
In short, although Foshan has been developing for hundreds of years, it is far behind the development level of the catering industry in cities such as Guangzhou and Shanghai.
Even if there are not so many popular restaurants and Internet celebrity snacks, there still needs to be traditional food that is more distinctive and shows "local" charm.
I hope that Foshan’s food culture can be better explored and developed in the future.
