The historical evolution of Liwan District;

Historically, Liwan District is located outside the west gate of Fucheng, Guangzhou, commonly known as Xiguan. It is named after the beautiful scenery of "A Bay with Bixi and Litchi Red on both sides". Liwan District is connected with the ocean, with inland river shipping all over the country, smooth land and water traffic, and rich trade, agriculture and people, which is highly valued by the government. The wisdom of the people of past dynasties has made Xiguan famous all over the world, spreading mountains and seas, leaving many historic places of interest and cultural heritage for generations to come.

In BC 196, doctor Lu Jian 'an of Han Dynasty came to the river near his residence in Mudeng to plant lotus roots and lychees. During the Eastern Han Dynasty, the litchi here became the best product of the attacking emperor and a gift from the imperial court to foreign envoys, so this land of geomantic omen was called "Litchi Bay".

During the Ming Dynasty, it was already an important port for foreign trade and cultural exchange in China. At that time, Huaiyuan Post Station, the management organization of overseas trade in Guangzhou, was located near the 18th House today, which was specially designed for overseas envoys to stay in China and became a place for Chinese and foreign businessmen to engage in trade.

1685, the Qing government established Guangdong Customs. 1757, the Qing government closed its doors to the outside world, but licensed 13 Guangzhou firms to engage in foreign trade. From 1757 to 1842, Shisanhang became the only legal foreign trade port of the Qing government for 85 years.

From 65438 to 0859, due to the Second Opium War, Shamian was forced to lease to Britain and France as concessions, and foreign businessmen entered Shamian to conduct trade directly in China.

In the 10th year of the Republic of China (1922), Guangzhou CCBA was established, and Xiguan District was subordinate to Guangzhou.

In 34 years (1946), Shamian Concession was recovered.

After the founding of New China, 1952 established the Western District, and in August 1960 changed its name to Liwan District. In 2002, the Guangzhou Municipal Government implemented the administrative division adjustment, and included the big beach sand island into Liwan District. In 2005, with the approval of the State Council, Fangcun District was placed under the jurisdiction of Liwan District.
