The cuisine of a place is inseparably related to the cultural environment.
Tiantai can be said to be a mountain city in the immortal style of Taoism, which is the birthplace of the Buddhist Tiantai Sect and a Taoist resort. In addition, many people in Tiantai are from Henan Province, so they brought their noodle-making skills with them. This, coupled with the fusion and merger of later generations, has resulted in a unique culinary culture.
With all this background, it shouldn't be hard to imagine the flavor of the small city of Tiantai. Vegetarian and noodle dishes are predominant, the taste is mainly salty and aromatic, and the cooking method is not complicated, so the original taste and texture of the ingredients are more reflected.
To share with you the "food map" I collected on my visit to Tiantai, I'd like to share with you the "food map" I collected on my visit to Tiantai.
The left side is similar to the new city, larger restaurants, shopping malls in this side, restaurants and restaurants in the menu also covers the specialty snacks of Tiantai, suitable for more people to eat together with the main meal, and incidentally, point to the two characteristics of the snacks to taste.
The right side is similar to the old town, the real authentic specialty snacks camp, including a pedestrian zone, suitable for three or two friends leisurely stroll and eat, digging nooks and crannies of the treasure of the old store.
Next, we went from the new town to the old town, according to the store to talk about what I ate in Tiantai are good!
Tian Tai Xu Jia Snacks?Don't be fooled by the name of the store, when I found the store door with a mind to eat stalls, I was shocked that it was a quite elegant restaurant.
The self-service tea is a pot of hot soybean milk, which is the first time I encountered. Meal time to go to business is very good, almost every table is occupied but not to the extent of queuing, it is wonderful. The menu is super extensive, with almost everything on offer, and it's worth introducing the specialty snacks, of course.
Battered Latte
The batter is dragged around the pan to form a cake, wrapped in a variety of fillings: shredded potatoes, mustard greens, eggs, dried vegetables, tofu, and so on, and then stacked on top of each other. Doesn't it sound simple, plain and uninspired? But one bite and I'm screaming, "This tastes good!
I ordered the tofu paste latte, and the overall flavor you can think of is the Shandong mixed grain pancake with onion and tofu filling. The shell is crispy and dry, and the filling is a simple tofu paste with a savory scallion flavor.
The more I eat, the drier the pancake gets, but the tofu filling makes up for it. When you bite into it, the crunchy pastry shell, the soft tofu paste, and the seemingly unmistakable aroma of egg, you can't help but take a bite after a bite, and it's not too dry and not too chaffy, so remember to eat it while it's still hot.
Paste La Zao
and paste La Tide can not be said to be exactly the same, can only be said to be irrelevant! It is actually a soup made of starch, to which you can add diced bamboo shoots, mustard greens, peanuts, and oil bubbles ...... a bowl of the same fresh and fragrant paste. Great for breakfast.
I feel that this dish and Henan's hu spicy soup designation is a little something, but the flavor is more simple and refreshing, is let a person to eat do not get tired of, eat not tired. I can't help but describe it as "mom's flavor" because it's so much like the noodle soup my mom used to make for me when I was hungry as a kid.
Since I don't get paid to advertise at Xu's Snacks, I'm going to recommend its nearby competitor (Master Tuan Shui). All are stores with a wide variety of menus and a one-stop store for a variety of specialty snacks.
Yu Ching ZhaiOu Ching Zhai, said to have been built in 1931, is a famous, long-established and arguably Netflix-quality eatery. Its location is a pedestrian street in the old town, it is recommended to eat dinner, and then you can take a stroll.
Dumpling Cake Cylinder
In a dumpling cake cylinder, there must be more than a dozen ingredients, meat round cake, chicken cake, pork liver, fat meat and other meat dishes, gold needles, fungus, vermicelli, shredded bamboo shoots, vegetable stalks and other vegetarian dishes, put in a certain order on the paste La Tide skin rolled up, and then fried.
I call it the Deluxe Extra Supreme Cylinder Paste Latte, and it's delicious! The shell is crispy, the filling is rich, and the bite is big and satisfying. The flavor is also consistently obvious and simple, but just delicious.
Flatbread
It's kind of like wontons, but with a thinner skin and a veggie filling of diced radish, peanuts, and wild rice. You know, I'm a carnivore who only wants "meat" when I go out to eat! But the flatbread conquered me.
It's very refreshing, and it's so healthy that you don't feel guilty about eating a lot of it. They can be steamed, boiled in soup, or deep fried. My favorite way to eat it is fried and then dipped in soy sauce and vinegar. The moment I tasted it, Xiao Long Bao's position in my heart was in jeopardy. And this one can have meat too, depending on your choice.
Steamed Cake
Another seemingly mediocre dish that is actually part of Tiantai's intangible cultural heritage!
Made purely from glutinous rice, it's said to be so soft and delicate that it was once used to entertain guests. But I did not try, this one looks very top of the look, really can not be stuffed, have eaten friends can now say a little.
Old Boy Vegetable Dried Cake and Ox Blood SoupThis is a very famous local restaurant, as evidenced by the faded color of the signboard. There's no place to sit in the store, so I got a dried plum cake. When I bought it, I was like, "Where can this be good if you don't have dried plum cake anywhere?
But it turned out to be really delicious, not that the flavor is so special, it is the filling is sufficient, the pastry is crisp outside and tough inside, freshly baked, to give the feeling that it is really made from the heart, an ultimate dried plum cake!
8 dollars a, my friend and I a person half, not greedy, finished eating really can not get enough.
Beef Blood Soup is also a great specialty of Tiantai, and Old Boy has it here, but there was no place to sit and eat it, so I didn't get to try it (actually, I didn't dare). Large chunks of beef blood and white radish stew together, super large bucket, to give you a bowl of this, like radish or beef blood to say to the boss. The "flavor" of the full, like to eat the water can try.
Old authentic wheatcake storeAlso in the hearts of locals irreplaceable old, wheat cake now packaged ready to do, fillings to choose from. You have to use three chopsticks to eat it, just like Western food, one to hold it and two to pick it up, also known as "rooftop pizza".
Make your own favorite dipping sauce, vinegar, soy sauce, chili, really fragrant!
While it sounds similar to the paste Lata again, but it tastes different, the cake is soft, the crust has thickness, with a little bit of fried crispy. The filling is recommended to be savory and sweet with shredded pumpkin, and the caper dumplings with the same caper meat filling.
Thick IceAfter talking about a slew of Tiantai specialties, I'm going to wrap things up with a place to eat ice. It's the last store I ate at in Tiantai, and the one I most hope will soon be a national chain!
When I was doing a food guide on Little Red Book, I noticed this "thick ice" dessert store that was always mentioned. I was curious, mango ice strawberry ice, this is not everywhere? Isn't it more popular because of the nice decoration? It wasn't until I went there myself that I realized there was something different about Thick Ice.
The fruit ice I ate in most dessert stores is the feeling of smoothie, like water + milk frozen and broken up to get, a mouthful down through the cold, the kind of brain pain.
And the thick ice ice is amazing, it feels like directly with milk, or thin cream frozen into a block after shaving out. The color is beige, and the ice is in the form of filaments. Because it is a long, thin filament of ice, so gathered in the bowl, they are a fluffy, hitchhiking state, eat in the mouth with a sense of "air", that's right! That's right, it's airy!
Bite down like cotton, fluffy and soft, wait until the temperature of the mouth will melt it a little bit, feel cold and refreshing.
Ice melts more slowly, and the melted liquid is only at the bottom of the bowl, unlike other smoothies that end up being basically a puddle of water, and the thicker ice hardly ever melts. The flavor types are pretty much the same, so just pick your favorite. This one-of-a-kind ice is really worth trying.
SummaryIn the small county of Tiantai, prices are low and taxi is cheap. The personality of local food in Taizhou is "simple but with hidden surprises". Although it looks inconspicuous, the ingredients themselves and its practice seem ordinary, but eat up really good, less than 50 per capita per meal, cake food is basically a few dollars, really love love love! I'll definitely go back when I have the chance!
