What should we pay attention to when planting torreya trees?

Several issues that should be paid attention to when planting torreya:

(1) For interplanting in tea gardens, especially old tea gardens, it is best to dig holes one year in advance. It has been observed that the growth potential of torreyas that were interplanted in tea gardens, especially those dug in holes and planted in old tea gardens, is generally not strong.

(2) When interplanting torreya in tea gardens, attention should be paid to fertilizer damage. The more meticulous the tea garden management is, the greater the slope of the tea garden, and the torreya will be relatively seriously damaged by fertilizer.

(3) It is prohibited to cultivate torreya trees in ecological forest areas. Torreya is a shade-loving tree species and needs a cool natural environment to grow. The destruction of the ecological forest has greatly reduced the soil and water conservation and water source conservation functions of the forest, greatly weakened the ecological function, and destroyed the original ecology of torreya.

(4) Do not interplant leguminous crops in torreya orchards. Experiments have shown that interplanting leguminous crops consumes a large amount of available potassium in the soil. Another test showed that the available potassium content in torreya soil in the city and even the province was low. Therefore, do not interplant leguminous crops in torreya orchards.

Key points of torreya cultivation technology

Torreya is a unique economic tree species in my country, and it is also a rare and precious dried fruit in the world. Most of them are dioecious, and the fruit period is more than a hundred years. It is cultivated in Qiaoshan Village and Tangkou Town of Xinming Township in our district. After being fried, torreya is crunchy and delicious, rich in nutrients, and has the effects of relieving coughs, moistening the lungs, eliminating hemorrhoids, repelling parasites, and promoting blood circulation. The torreya tree has excellent material and straight grain. It is a good material for shipbuilding, construction and furniture making. The torreya tree is majestic and tall, with a graceful appearance and does not wilt all year round. It is a good tree species for gardening and soil and water conservation.

There are mainly two types of torreyas in our area: round torreyas and long torreyas. Among them, the rice torreya and the small round torreya are deeply loved by the masses because of their thin shells, firmness, easy peeling, and crispy fragrance. The leader of the Qiaoshan Village Group, "Shenxian Torreya", has a better reputation and quality. There are also many individual plants of good quality. In the future, efforts should be made to develop excellent varieties, and other varieties can be used as rootstocks to be grafted with improved varieties.

1. Seed collection and cultivation of grafted seedlings

1. Seed collection and germination: From the "White Dew" to the "Autumnal Equinox", the outer seed coat of Torreya will change from green to yellow-green, with slight cracks. , it is mature when the seed coat turns purple-red. After the seeds are collected, peel off the aril and store them in wet sand in time. During the germination process before sowing, water should be frequently sprinkled and turned to maintain humidity so that the seed coats will crack, the exposed buds will be basically consistent, and the seedlings will emerge neatly.

2. Seedling cultivation and grafting:

(1) Sowing and seedling cultivation: Take the seeds with exposed buds or cracked seed coats and sow them in drills in winter and spring, with a row spacing of 40cm and a plant spacing of 5-10cm. . After emergence, tents should be set up to provide shade, cultivating and weeding. Special attention should be paid to drought prevention according to the shallow root distribution in the seedling stage. Biennial seedlings can be planted in the mountains.

(2) Grafting: It is best to graft Torreya in spring when the sap begins to flow. Various methods are suitable. As long as the operation is skillful and post-grafting management is careful, the survival rate can reach 70-90%.

2. Site selection for afforestation

1. Forest land selection: It is advisable to choose ventilated, sunny, foggy valleys and streams. In our area, it is suitable to be planted in valleys and mountain depressions with fertile soil surrounded by mountains above 400 meters above sea level. Dry and barren hills and ridges are not suitable for planting. Mountain villages are often surrounded by good places to plant torreya trees.

2. Land preparation and afforestation: Comprehensive land preparation in winter. Slopes with steep slopes should be prepared in strips and holes should be dug at fixed points. The hole is 1 meter big and 0.5 meters deep, and base fertilizer is applied. Choose a cloudy day in early spring, bring up the seedlings with soil, and plant them tightly. There are about 20 trees per acre. Pay attention to planting male trees appropriately in the forest and upwind of the main wind to facilitate pollination.

3. Tending and management

In the first few years after afforestation, intercropping should be implemented and farming should be used instead of tending. After the forest is established, it enters the flowering and fruiting period. Fertilization and protection should be strengthened to retain the number of male plants. The female torreya forest should be pruned to keep the tree crown low and open to facilitate artificial assisted pollination. In old torreya forest areas with many wild torreya seedlings, methods of cutting and irrigating to remove weeds and on-site grafting (both cleft and cut grafting are acceptable) can be used to improve economic benefits.
