1. Excellent varieties of domestic meat pigeons
(1) Kilogram pigeons
Kilogram pigeons were bred by Chen Wenguang, a famous pigeon raising expert in my country. This breed is produced in Kunming and contains the blood of Herm and other pigeons. It weighs about 1 kilogram, so it is called the kilogram pigeon. It has strong adaptability, strong resistance to stress, and strong flying ability. Young pigeons grow quickly in the early stage, mature early, fatten easily, and save feed. The body is relatively long, mostly tile gray, but there are also other coat colors.
(2) Shiqi Pigeon
Produced in Shiqi Town, Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, my country. It is composed of king pigeon, Lunti, Mengdan and other varieties and local hybrids. Physical characteristics: long body, long wings, long tail, banana bud-shaped body, similar in size to a king pigeon. It has a flat head and shins, a long nose and a pointed beak, and small eyes. It has strong reproductive capacity, producing 7 to 8 pairs of squabs every year, but its eggshells are thin and easily broken during hatching. Adult male pigeons weigh 750-800 grams, female pigeons weigh 650-700 grams, and four-week-old squabs can weigh up to 600 grams. Shiqi pigeons have many coat colors, with white being the best.
(3) Yao'an meat pigeons
Produced in Yaoning, Yunnan, they are small and medium-sized meat pigeons with early maturity and strong adaptability. They weigh 600 to 750 grams, have high feed returns and are tolerant. Rough feeding.
2. Excellent foreign breeds of meat pigeons
(1) King pigeons
King pigeons are native to the United States, and white king pigeons and silver king pigeons are common. The white-feathered king pigeon, a high-productivity line selected and bred by relevant scientific research units in Shanghai, is one of the meat breeding pigeons with the best production performance in my country. The weight of adult male pigeons is 750-900 grams, and the weight of female pigeons is 650-750 grams. The whole body of the feathers is pure white, the head is round, the forehead is protruding, the beak is thin and the nose is small, the chest is broad and round, and the tail is long and slightly winged. Each year, 9 to 10 pairs of eggs are laid, and 6 to 8 pairs of squabs are bred. The average weight of 4-week-old squabs is 620 grams.
(2) King pigeon K type (American landed king pigeon)
King pigeon K type is a hybrid and improved variety of king pigeon. It has many feather colors, strong production performance and short cycle. Resistant to rough feeding. Adult pigeons weigh 500 to 750 grams. Squabs are small, weighing about 500 grams at 4 weeks old.
(3) French ground pigeon (Mondan pigeon)
Produced in France and Italy, it is large in size, not good at flying, and likes to walk. The annual weight of adult pigeons is about 1,000 grams, and there are 6 to 8 pairs of squabs produced annually. The weight of 4-week-old squabs can reach 750 grams. This pigeon is roughly divided into three types: crown type, flat head type, and claw and shin type (divided into hairy and hairless).
(4) Herm's pigeon (Hemp pigeon)
Original from Belgium and the United Kingdom. The Big Herm bred in the United States in 1920 is the best. The weight of adult pigeons can reach 1000 grams, and the weight of 4-week-old squabs is 600 grams. The disadvantage is that the number of egg-laying clutches is small, 5 to 6 pairs per year. Pure Herm pigeons weigh less than Big Herm, 800 to 900 grams, and produce 7 to 8 pairs of squabs annually.
(5) Canu Pigeon (Red Pigeon)
Produced in Belgium and France. Its characteristics: broad chest, thick neck, short tail, small and deep-set eyes. Weighing between 700 and 900 grams, it looks majestic and stands upright. It has strong reproductive capacity and produces about 10 pairs of squabs every year. Likes to cluster, has poor adaptability and poor disease resistance. Pure red feathers are considered valuable, while pure white and pure yellow feathers are both top-grade. It has strong nesting ability and high fertilization and hatching rate.
(6) Lunti pigeon (Luan pigeon)
Originally produced in Italy, it is the largest species of meat pigeon, weighing up to 1200-1500 grams, 4 weeks old squab Up to 800 grams. The reproductive capacity is strong, and 8 to 10 pairs of eggs are laid annually. However, due to its large size, low fertilization rate and hatching rate, the production efficiency of the commercial squab is not great, but it is better for breeding other new varieties.
