How to give a dog an enema?
Enemas are generally used when dogs can't eat independently.

Usually enema is a method used by dogs when they have difficulty eating or even loss of appetite. Enema can be used not only for drug administration, but also for supplementing nutrient solution. According to the different purposes of enema, enema can be divided into shallow enema and deep enema.

First, the enema target: dogs that can't eat food or medicine directly.

Second, the enema method:

1. Shallow enema:

In shallow enema, the liquid medicine is poured into the rectum. When dogs have difficulty eating or swallowing and lose appetite, they are often given artificial nutrition. When the rectum or colon is inflamed, inject anti-inflammatory drugs, and when the dog is excited, inject sedatives to eliminate fecal accumulation in the rectum.

The amount of liquid medicine for shallow enema is 30-50ml each time. The enema solution depends on the use, and generally uses 1% warm saline, Ringer's solution, glycerol, 0. 1% potassium permanganate solution, 2% boric acid solution, glucose solution, etc. Hold the dog in place during the enema, and then another person pulls the dog's tail aside. Then, the operator holds the medicine bottle containing the liquid medicine in one hand, and slowly inserts the latex tube of the infusion set into the hepatic portal about 5- 10cm in the other hand, and then lifts the medicine bottle to make the liquid medicine flow into the rectum. Keep the dog quiet after enema to avoid defecation and discharge the liquid medicine. For enema with artificial nutrition, anti-inflammation and sedation, the stool in the rectum should be discharged before enema.

2. Deep enema:

This method is suitable for the treatment of intussusception, colon constipation, and the discharge of toxic substances and foreign bodies in the stomach. During enema, keep the dog standing or lying on its side, in a posture of low front and high back, and pull its tail aside by one person. The operator holds a medicine bottle filled with liquid medicine in one hand, inserts the latex tube of the infusion set into the anus 8- 10cm in the other hand, and then lifts the medicine bottle high to make the liquid medicine flow into the rectum. First, inject a small amount of liquid medicine to soften the field feces, and then inject a large amount of liquid medicine. Penetration is determined by the dog's consignment. Generally, 80- 100ml for puppies and 0/00-500 ml for adults, and the temperature of the liquid medicine is 35℃.

Third, tips:

1. When there is fecal retention in rectum, remove the fecal retention according to the essentials of rectal examination, and then perform enema.

2. Don't be too rough when operating, so as not to damage the intestinal mucosa or cause intestinal perforation.
