Cultural Weihai has a coastline of nearly a thousand kilometers and is close to the three major fishing grounds of the Yellow Sea, Bohai Sea and East China Sea. Weihai is blessed with unique marine resources and is China's number one fishing port. Fishermen living in coastal areas have been with the sea for generations. Facing the vast ocean that can bring polyphony and disaster, they are both respectful and fearful, forming a unique cultural custom of coastal fishermen.
In ancient times, fishermen made sacrifices to the gods according to specific festivals. On the morning of New Year's Eve or the first day of the Lunar New Year, fishermen will also go to the Dragon King Temple or Thean Hou Temple to burn incense and worship the God of the Sea. They place offerings and burn incense paper at the seaside, praying to the gods to bless the fishing boats for a safe year. In addition, every fisherman in Weihai is the God of Wealth. Every time he goes to sea, he must burn incense to bless himself and make a fortune at sea. Fishermen in Weihai regard fishing boats as their partners and even their livelihood. Therefore, the fishermen take great care of it and give it spirituality. Each wooden fishing boat must have a pair of big protruding eyes like a fish, but after the new boat is built, only the eyes are painted, and the eyes are not painted, but there are big black circles on the sides and a big white circle in the middle.
It wasn’t until the new ship was launched that the ship owner chose an auspicious day, beat gongs and drums, set off firecrackers, and personally gave the ship a blessing. In the hearts of fishermen, the finishing touch marks the birth of a new creature. Everyone chants the song of great prosperity and pushes the new red and green boat from the shore to the sea step by step. Every spring when the flowers bloom, Weihai fishermen will carry the fishing nets that have been renovated over the winter to the seaside and bake them with grains and grass to ward off evil spirits. They are called vegetable nets. Then firecrackers are set off and incense paper is burned. The fishermen carry the fishing nets, call the numbers and board the fishing boats, and put the fishing nets in the warehouse, which means that the warehouse is full of fish and the boat is full of money every year.
