The dairy product pollution incident in China in 2008 (or the milk powder pollution accident in China in 2008, the poisoned milk powder accident in China in 2008 and the poisoned milk powder accident in China in 2008) is a food safety accident in China. The cause of the accident was that many babies who ate milk powder produced by Sanlu Group were found to have kidney calculi, and then melamine was found in their milk powder.

According to the published figures, as of September 2, 20081day, there were 39,965 infants who received outpatient treatment consultation and recovered due to the use of infant milk powder, and 2892 infants were hospitalized/KLOC-0. Before that, 1 579 was cured and discharged, and 4 cases died. As of September 25th, there were five babies in Hong Kong.

Event background

In order to regulate the supply and demand of the mainland market, except for importing nearly 300,000 tons of dairy products from overseas countries such as Rixin to cope with the consumption level of senior high schools, most consumer groups in Chinese mainland, including infants and young children, mainly rely on products independently produced by China.

Under this factor, the well-known Sanlu brand launched a bag of infant formula milk powder at the price of 18 yuan (about US$ 3), which was less than half of the price of imported milk powder to cope with the large-scale dairy market. Later, it became an important and well-known infant milk powder brand in Chinese mainland, ranking first in the self-made dairy market in Chinese mainland for many years.

Despite the investigation by the relevant units, the procuratorate in Chinese mainland believed that the dairy purchasing station should bear the main responsibility for the pollution incident, and severely arrested the relevant parties. However, some people questioned that the reason for the tainted milk powder incident was that Sanlu Group robbed the poor rural market in Chinese mainland and cut corners to reduce costs.
