Ningmu 26-2 American pennisetum scientific name: Pennisetum. americamum. (L.) K.Schum.cv.Ningmu.No.26-2.

The Soil and Fertilizer Research Institute of the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences obtained two combinations of F2 generation seeds from the Tift23A (Pennisetum Americana) × N51 (Elephant Grass) triploid hybrid introduced from the United States. After 4 years of single plant selection and mixed selection, a new variety with basically stable genetics was developed.

It is a tall annual grass with a compact plant shape, upright and clustered stalks, 12 to 15 tillers, and a plant height of about 320cm. The panicles are dense and 30-33cm long. Each ear contains 2500-3000 seeds, which are grey-brown and weigh 6.5-7.0g. The reproductive period is about 130 days. The top soil of the seedlings is weak and their growth is slow. It has strong stress resistance, resistance to high temperature, humidity, drought, salt and alkali, and lodging. Extremely sensitive to nitrogen fertilizers. Under fertile soil and high-temperature and high-humidity climate conditions, it grows rapidly, accumulates large amounts of dry matter, and has high fresh grass yield, but slightly lower than hybrid Pennisetum. The fresh grass yield is 75,000 to 120,000 kg/square hm, and the stems have a sweet taste. It is juicy and has good palatability. It provides important green fodder for herbivorous livestock and fish in the provinces in the Yangtze River Basin of my country from June to September. It is suitable for planting in the Yangtze River Basin and similar climate areas.
