Poseidon, the Greek sea god, is a well-known name in ancient Greek mythology. He and Zeus and Hades are brothers, in charge of the ocean, heaven and the underworld, and he is the god who rules the world's oceans. In the late empire, the Romans used Roman gods to correspond to Greek gods, among which Neptune was the Roman god corresponding to Poseidon, and Neptune's Latin name came from him.
