It is a perennial herb, plant height is probably between 15-50 centimeters, there is a clear fishy smell. Its stems are ambrosial in the lower part, rooting underground, and the upper part of the whole is erect, relatively smooth and basically hairless.

Fishweed's leaves are alternate, broadly ovate or cordate in shape, roughly 3-8 centimeters long and 4-6 centimeters wide. The apex is acuminate and the margins are entire and finely glandular. The upper and lower parts are different in color, the upper part being yellowish green or dark green, and the lower part being purplish red. There are long petioles, 3-5 centimeters long.

It usually blooms between May and August, with the peak season being in summer. The flowers bloom in spikes, which are yellow in color, and grow at the top of the stem, opposite the leaves, with four white bracts at the base, petal-like. The flowers are small and have no tepals.

Its fruiting period is usually between July and October. The fruit is a capsule, ovoid in shape. The top part of the fruit splits when it ripens.
