Flat-breasted turtles are amphibious, and they like to live in fast-flowing mountain streams full of boulders and rubble. They mainly feed on snails, clams, shellfish, shrimp, fish, crabs, frogs, insects and snails, and they also eat leaves and roots when they are hungry. Sexual maturity begins in about three years, and eggs are laid from April to September. Mainly distributed in southern China, it is the most special kind of freshwater turtle in China, and distributed abroad in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. It is extremely rare in the wild.
