2.3 Origin

The root of Artemisia annua (烏头) is the caudex of the buttercup plant, family Ranunculaceae. Dig up the roots in late summer and early fall, remove the seedling leaves and rootlets, wash and dry them in the sun, put them in a sack and hit them to make the appearance smooth. Put in a dry place to prevent moisture and insect moths.

2.4 Original form

Perennial herb, 50-70 cm high. Tuberous roots erect, fusiform cylindrical, 5-8 cm long, the outer skin brownish yellow. Stem erect, sparsely retrorsely pubescent. Leaves alternate, palmately 3-parted, lobes again 2 to 9-parted, then finely lobed in varying depths, ultimate lobules linear-lanceolate or linear, both surfaces several glabrous. Lower stem leaves long-petiolate, withered at flowering, denser leaves above center, short-petiolate. Racemes terminal, inflorescence sleeves retrorsely pubescent; floral sepals 5, blue-purple, petaloid, upper sepal inflated cap-like, ca. 2.5 cm tall; petals a pair, long clawed, short spurred; stamens numerous, unequal, filaments sparsely pubescent; ovaries 3 to 5, densely covered with straight, spreading yellow villous hairs. Follicles 3-5, many seeded. Flowering period August to September. Fruiting September to October.

2.5 Habitat

Born in alpine meadows, mountain slopes and under open forests. It is distributed in Yunnan and Sichuan. Produced in Yunnan, Sichuan.

2.6 Properties

The dried root is long cylindrical, about 0.5-1.7 centimeters in diameter and 5-8 centimeters long. Appearance of black-brown or yellow-brown, full, wrinkles fine, there are more obvious, more longitudinal wrinkles, often with lateral roots of the fracture, occasionally branched. The texture is brittle and easy to break, the section is slightly rounded, now powder white. The corky skin is thin, the skin part is wide, the wood part and the pith part account for about 1/3 of the diameter, and the color near the formation layer is darker, showing black-brown circle. The gas is weak, with a pungent and numbing flavor. To the skin color black and brown, heart white, powdery, with black circles, full, smooth is preferred.

2.7 Chemical composition

The tuberous root of Artemisia annua from Zhaotong, Yunnan contains six alkaloids: aconitine, hypaconitine, and Artemisia annua ethanol, pentanol and hexanol.

The caudex of Artemisia annua from Dongchuan, Yunnan Province contains 5 alkaloids: artemisinin a, b, c, d and hept.

2.8 Pharmacological effects

The salts of Artemisia annua A, B, C and B alkaloids showed analgesic effect on mice. Some people used Artemisia annua A alkaloids through the hot-plate method of experiments, and its analgesic index is only 1/11 of morphine, and its analgesic efficacy is very unsatisfactory. Artemisia annua has a similar digitalis-like effect on frog heart, which produces cardiac dysfunction, atropine and quinine can be stopped, and the symptoms of parasympathetic excitation are manifested in the case of poisoning.

Iron rod hammer is very toxic to mice, with 100% decoction by gavage, the lethal dose is equivalent to 0.08 to 0.3 g raw / 10 g body weight. Mice have no ability to distinguish between 20% iron rod hammer bait and normal food, so it can be used to poison mice.

2.9 Toxicity

This product is highly toxic, toxic reactions occur within 0.5-3 hours after administration. The main symptoms: drowsiness, burning sensation in the mouth, increased secretion in mild cases; in severe cases, generalized numbness, tenderness, chills, swelling, throat discomfort, nausea and vomiting, salivation, dizziness, palpitations and irritability, abdominal pain with stool; in severe cases, the person who faints and falls down with cold limbs, cardiac arrhythmia, drop in blood pressure, respiratory distress or convulsions and coma, electrocardiogram shows frequent pre-menstrual contractions. Severe cases may die of circulatory and respiratory failure. There has been a precedent of death by poisoning only 2 hours after taking the drug, so it should be used with caution. Antidote: According to general clinical experience, atropine, procainamide and quinidine are considered to be more effective antagonists, which can be effective if used in time. In addition, folk also use bamboo shoots, bamboo roots, bamboo, coriander, fengfeng, tea, licorice, etc. as antidotes, any 2 to 3 kinds of each 5 money, water decoction; or lard, brown sugar, honey, any one of the boiled rice to eat, can be tried as appropriate.

2.10 Concoction

2.13 Usage and dosage of Artemisia annua

For internal use: powder, 2 to 4 centigrams; or soaked in wine. Externally: rubbed in wine and applied.

2.14 Caution

It is highly toxic and should not be taken internally without concoction. During the period of taking the medicine, avoid eating cold, beans, beef and mutton.

2.15 Recipes

2.16 Clinical application of Artemisia annua

The following two varieties of the former plant are used in Sichuan and Yunnan as Artemisia annua on snow.

① Sparsely flowered short-stalked aconite, the main difference is that the inflorescence has spreading pubescence. Distribution in Sichuan and Yunnan.

② voluminous short-stalked aconite, the main difference is that the room is curved and close white pubescence. Distributed in Sichuan.
