The transverse bands on the side of the body are distinctly dark brown with white edges, and the dorsal and ventral bands are connected to form a complete ring, with 13 bands, and black dots in between the bands and on the head, which is similar to that of the reticulated naked-breasted eel, but this species has a lower body height and a shorter head. It has sharp teeth, so beware of biting, and its body length can be more than 60 centimeters.
Mainly inhabits the caves between coral reefs or the crevices formed by reefs and sand, feeding on fish and cephalopods. It is a food fish and can also be used as an ornamental fish.
Only distributed in the western Pacific Ocean, including Japan, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, Indonesia, the Philippines and so on.
