The Origin of the Names of the 12 Months in English
There are 12 months in the Gregorian calendar year, but many people don't know the origin of the English names for the 12 months. The Gregorian calendar has its origins in the Roman calendar. Roman English original only 10 months, the ancient Roman emperor decided to add two months at the end of the year, and then Julius * Julius Caesar moved these two months to the beginning of the year, became January and February, the original January and February will become March and April, and so on. This is the calendar that the world uses today.
January
In Roman legend, there was a patron saint named Janus, who had two faces, one looking back to the past and the other to the future. It was considered significant to choose his name as the name of the first month of the year to bring in the new year. English
January is derived from the patron saint's Latin name, January.
February
Every year at the beginning of February, the Roman people celebrated the festival of Fibulum by killing animals and drinking wine. On this day, a whip called Februa, made of cattle and grass, was commonly used to whip barren women in order to conceive and give birth to children. On this day, people also confess their sins of the past year, cleanse their souls, and ask the gods to forgive them and make them a chaste person. February, the English month of February, is derived from the Latin word Februar-ius, or Februm.
March----- March
March was originally January, the beginning of the New Year, on the old Roman calendar. After Julius Caesar reformed the calendar, the original January became March, but the Romans still regarded March as the beginning of the year. In addition, according to traditional custom, March was the time of the year to go to war. In order to honor Mars, the god of war, people took the Latin name of the god of war as the name of the month of March. The English word March evolved from the name of the god of war.
April
April in Rome is the month of spring. The month of April in Rome is the time of spring, when flowers begin to bloom. The English word April evolved from the Latin word April, the day of flowering.
May--May
The goddess Maya, in Roman mythology, specialized in spring and life. In honor of this goddess, the Romans named the month of May after her, the Latin Maius, from which the English word May evolved.
June--June
Juno, in Roman mythology, was the king of the gods and goddesses, and the god of fertility and protection of women. Ancient Rome revered her so much that they dedicated the month of June to her, naming it after her, the Latin Junius. The English month of June evolved from the name of this goddess. Some scholars believe that Junius may have been the surname of a prominent nobleman in a Latin family.
July--July
After the assassination of Julius Caesar, the Roman ruler, the famous Roman general, Mark * by Antony, suggested that the month of July, the month of Julius Caesar's birth, be named after Julius Caesar, the Latin word for Caesar. Julius. This suggestion was adopted by the Senate. The English word July evolved from this.
August - August
After the death of Julius *Caesar, his nephew Octavian succeeded him as Roman Emperor. To be on a par with Caesar, he also wanted to name a month after himself. His birthday was in September, but he chose August. After his accession to the throne, the Roman Senate granted him the honorific title of Augustus in August. So he decided to name the month of August after this honorific. It turned out that August was one day less than July, and in order to equalize with Caesar, he decided to take one day out of February and add it to August. From then on, there was one less day in February. The English word August evolved from the emperor's Latin honorific.
September
July on the old calendar was September after Julius Caesar's reform of the calendar, the Latin word Septem meaning "seventh" month. Although the calendar was reformed, people still used the old name for September. The English word September evolved from this.
October
The English month of October comes from the Latin word Octo, which means "eight". Like September above, the calendar has changed, but the name remains the same.
November
The Roman emperors Augustus and Julius Caesar both had their own namesake months, and the Roman citizens and Senate asked the then Roman emperor Tiberius to name November after him. But Tiberius did not agree, wisely saying to everyone that if every Roman emperor named the month after himself, what would happen if a 13th emperor appeared? So the month of November retained its old name, Novem, which is Latin for "nine". The English word November evolved from this.
December--The Roman Emperor Lucius wanted to name the last month of the year after his mistress Amagonius, but was opposed by the Senate. So, December still follows the old name Decem, that is, the Latin "10" meaning. The English word December evolved from this.
